TOEFL samples essay: Skyscrapers - good or not? #1 (permalink) Tue Jan 09, 2007 8:11 am   TOEFL samples essay: Skyscrapers - good or not?

As population grow and cities become more crowded, there is pressure throughout the world to construct ever taller buildings to provide accommodation and offices. Many people object to such developments, citing the social as well as the physical dangers. Do you agree with the objections to skyscrapers?

With the development of the economy, especially in developing countries, there are more and more skyscapers are rising days by days in the cities. Many people critize this trend with the fear that skyscapers may cause social as well as physical dangers. I strongly support this opinion.

Firstly, skyscapers often destroy the space of ancient architecture. This affect may become more serious in ancient towns or citities which have many cultural heritages. Economic development should always come with cultural and traditional values preserving.

Besides, skyscapers also mean attracting more people to the center of cities. This is one of the reasons for overpopulation in urban areas that results in traffic overloading and pollution. In stead of building skyscapers in citites, people would better to build small towns scattering over many areas of the country.

Lastly, there is also a danger for people who live or work in skyscapers, that is terrorism. Skyscapers have became vulnerable targets for terrorists. The 11th September attack still is in mind of many people and recall us one of the most horrible disasters of the US.

In general, I would like to say that I strongly object to the build of skyscapers in the recent years.
