After five hours My wife and I were " ready to call it a day", but the children objected because they were having such fun.

Could you please explain " ready to call it a day "

Ready to call it a day = ready to stop doing something, leave, etc.

"Tom, we've done a lot of work today, and I am exhausted. I'm ready to call it a day."

"Okay, Pete, see you tomorrow."
