Hi Tom,
I would use the comma to indicate a small pause and I wouldn't use the exclamation marks at all.

Hi Tom
To be honest, I feel a bit uncomfortable with both versions -- not because of the comma, but because you first wrote "the proverb" (which indicates that you are already referring to only one particular proverb) and then you followed that with the idea that you are going to give an example of proverbs (indefinite). To me your sentences aren't logical together (at least not in the order they're in).
Or am I missing something here?
