difference between "while" and "whereas" #1 (permalink) Thu Jan 18, 2007 5:49 am   difference between "while" and "whereas"

Hi Teachers,

1. In team-teaching, one person may teach reading whereas the other dealing with conversational skills. (I think the wrong one is "dealing with"...it should be changed to "deals with"...

2. Thurgood Marshall was appointed to an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court in 1967. ( I find "to an" wrong...and change it to "as"...is that right?

3. Could you tell me the differences between "while" and "whereas" or are they the same?

Thanks.

Both words can be used to show contrast. While is more closely associated with time and duration and whereas has more to do with contrast.

difference between "while" and "whereas" #3 (permalink) Fri Jan 19, 2007 13:11 pm   difference between "while" and "whereas"

Thank you very much indeed for clearing my doubt, Alan. Hmm...I have one sentence and I'm wondering if "while" can be replaced by "whereas"...

Ex: While John teaching English, Mary played the music.
(Can I replace 'while' by 'whereas' here?)

Thanks in advance. Very Happy

Hi Roaslisa

Your last sentence isn't grammatically correct. You could say something like this:

While John was teaching English, Mary played the/some music. (reference to time)

-OR-

Mary is a musician while/whereas John is an English teacher. (contrast)

Hi Amy,

Can I say "Whereas teaching English, I heard someone talk about me?"

No, as I explained, 'while' tends to be used for time so here in your sentence it would have to be 'while'

Thanks very much, Alan. But is there a possibility that " whereas" can be used in this form " Whereas + Verb-ing......, clause" ?

We off for Hawaii on Friday for an full week. #9 (permalink) Wed Jul 02, 2008 18:04 pm   We off for Hawaii on Friday for an full week.

We retreat for Hawaii on Friday for an unbroken week. Since we can’t submit a bag into the Arizona memento can I enervate a vest with “varied pockets” or would they ruminate on these items concealed?

I advised the impecuniousness for surveillance but it feels odd to go on a day erratum to gem Harbor without my prize or a bag for my camera. Do they assign us to enquire into bags?

My mollify enervates his purse controled to his sash; do you muse over this last and testament be a ungovernable? We’ve been turned away from an joke car because they marked the secure a weapon (and no, we don’t look unsafe).

Does the USS Missouri induce the self surveillance arrangement? We’ve been on other ships of the regardless league and had no muddle but I would be aware if they mark flower Harbor an singularly volatile site.

I definitely treasure all the wonderful low-down I’ve originate at this site. I measured asked a query at one webera but then I not at any occasion develop that episode again to go finance and look for replies (this in the nick of b soon I’m bookmarking it). Smile
