I’ve found 'roots grow downward, illustrating the effects of geotropism' and now understand (better )
what grow down[ward] can mean.

But... could you, please, give another expression or word to replace grown downward into in the phrase I quoted?

You could also say 'expand downward' or possibly 'expand into lower ranges'.
