Hi Che :D
I think it's a great idea to improve your listening skills , but I think there are many and many ways to do that without traveling abroad . There are a lot of kinds of media or tools could help you , and the best one is listening to Euronews channel ( for example ) or any English radio channel , and don't forget to listen to simple English songs , and I think it's the best ways.
Anyway, Good luck .. friend 8)

And Che
If you need a host person to show you around the States (we qualify as an English-speaking country... or at least an Amerenglish-speaking country. hehe), well, I have a spare room in my apartment to which you're welcome.
I know how hotels are -- really expensive. Let me know if you're interested. I'm not an axe-murderer or anything awful like that, though my place needs some serious cleaning and i can't cook for crap. hehe _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |

Hi Che, thanks a lot for brining up such an interesting question. I think Herc is right, there are many things you can do to improve your English without going abroad. You see, you can live in an 'English speaking country' without having that much contact to sophisticated native speakers of English. On the other hand, you can live in Tbilisi, Georgia and be exposed to the English language. Interestingly enough, one of the best methods of improving your speaking skills is to listen more. Many people think they need to speak more in order to speaking skills. But that's not quite true. If you don't feel comfortable expressing your thoughts in English, you have to increase 'your English input'. By listening and reading you automatically improve your speaking and writing skills. For example, as Tom pointed out the word advise is a verb while advice is the noun. If you read a lot, you eventually will know that 'an advice' does not exist in English and you will not write it.
Let us know what you think, Torsten

| Personally, I don't think a visit abroad necessarily improves a person's English. I spent some time in Romania, and altogether about a month in Hungary, and my English did not improve at all. |

Jamie, why would you regard Romania and Hungary as 'English speaking countries'?

Hi Herc :) I know there are many ways to improve listening skills without traveling, in my opinion the best is to communicate to English native speakers as much as possible... I often watch BBC and CNN but sometimes it's very boring.. :P _________________ Bombing for peace is like f.. for virginity |

Hi Torsten ;) I've been learning English for 3-4 years, may be more. I've been watching English Channels and I love English music and sometimes (not very often :) )I read English literature, but I need something new, something more interesting ... We had some guests from Scotland last week.. I could hardly understand what they were talking about.. that's why I've decided that I should be living in any English-native Country for 3 month.. ;) _________________ Bombing for peace is like f.. for virginity |
