Hi Alan,
I know pop as a word for the sound (when someone opens a bottle of Champagne or shots) and there is a whole bunch of DIFFERENTLY (!) sound Russian analogues for that (as well as in other languages, I believe).
I easily admit that popcorn also comes from the sound. (Or just has two origins, coming also from 'popularity', as well as 'popstar, 'popster'' )
Once I heard 'at a pop' (in informal conversation) – but I didn’t actually understand what that meant in that context. My suggestion was something like 'in a short moment, suddenly'. _________________ It’s impossible to learn swimming without entering the water… |

Morning Tamara,
'At a pop' is a good one. Your definition is spot on.
How about this: As you've just popped in for a cup of tea, I'll just pop the kettle on but I'll have to pop out for some tea and pop into my local to get some tea bags. I'll pop back very shortly as I know you haven't much time and want to be popping along soon. Perhaps you'll pop the TV on because I think something important has just popped up.

A little boy is playing with the new pop-gun he just got for his birthday. Meanwhile, his pop is opening a bottle of pop and 'singing' the Popcorn pop. The bottle goes off pop. At the same time, there's popcorn popping in the microwave. The little boy's mum has just popped a cake into the oven. She says, "all this popping has given me a headache. I think I'll just pop round the corner to get some more pop". Pop answers, "I already got some when I popped over to the pub" (said with a German accent).
Little boy: Can I pop the balloons now, Pop? Mum: If I hear another pop, my head will pop off! Pop: You heard your mum, Bob... |

"Half a pound of tuppenny rice, Half a pound of treacle. That’s the way the money goes, Pop goes the weasel.
Up and down the City road, In and out the Eagle, That’s the way the money goes, Pop goes the weasel.
Every night when I go out the monkey’s on the table. Take a stick and knock it off Pop goes the weasel.
A penny for a ball of thread Another for a needle, That’s the way the money goes, pop goes the weasel.
All around the cobblers bench the monkey chased the people; The donkey thought ’twas all in fun, pop goes the weasel."
Pop: said "Ok I am gonna pop on my pj?s and pop up the wooden hill, to pop off to sleep for pop free dreams _________________ Please meet Stewart Tunncilff |

some folks think that soda is "pop"
The "soda vs. pop" debate is a bitter one.
Then there is the South, where half of the people refer to carbonated beverages neither as soda nor pop, but as "coke(s)".
I'm sure Coca-Cola is thrilled by the blatant misuse of their trademark.

There's also a cereal brand (by Kellogg's) called Pops, and a pastry treat known as Pop Tarts. _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |
