When is 'schematic' be used as a noun? Wed Feb 07, 2007 18:53 pm  When is 'schematic' be used as a noun?

Hi,

When do we use the word 'schematic' as a noun? I've seen several web pages where 'schematic' is used meaning 'portfolio/catalog'. Is this common or would you say that 'schematic' should primarily be used as an adjective?

Thanks,
Torsten

Hi

Quote:
A schematic is a diagram, drawing, or sketch that represents the elements of a system using abstract, graphic symbols rather than realistic pictures. A schematic usually omits all details that are not relevant to the information the schematic is intended to convey, and may add unrealistic elements that aid comprehension.

Schematic is short for "schematic diagram". Now we just use the adjective on its own as a noun, mainly for electrical diagrams.

I would find it distinctly weird to see a catalogue referred to as a "schematic".
