Realize means understand because of what has happened before. In this test, part of a conversation, you need reckon to express the idea of it's my opinion and that is in contrast to what the other speaker says as he thinks (reckons) it's not difficult.

Please read the answer Alan gave in December 2004: http://www.english-test.net/forum/ftopic1617.html#4810

Also, note the difference between 'difference' and 'different'. Your sentence should read 'explain the difference'.

Well, I think it is and I ......... it's an impossible question to answer.
'I think it is' is my opinion and offers my agreement with previous assertion, isn't it?
'I realize' is sort of 'I think' synonym based on knowledge more than it so we can say :
Well, I think/I realize it is and I reckon it's an impossible question to answer.
Am I right? (My answer was ...realize)
