There's more than one accent up there. In the city of Marquette, the people talk something like the people in the lower peninsula, but with a slight Yooper thud. You can then drive 20 minutes to Negawnee, and the Yooper thud gets thuddier. Drive another 30 minutes to Ishpeming, and you'll find everyone, including small children, speaking with Finnish accents, even though pretty much nobody can speak Finnish anymore. Go from there toward the Wisconsin border, and people have a very distinct Cornish influence to their accent. You'd never guess they were from the United States.

Yeah, I'm referring mostly to the lower-UPers.

I'll never forget a doubles tennis match we played (my doubles partner and I) against a team from Wakefield.

We were killing them and they were taking it seriously/personally. After several points, one of them yelled "Jeeeezaaaaas" and I swear, he sounded like a braying donkey.

My partner and I were just about rolling. If not for the honor of the game (lol) we'd have been on the court, laughing hysterically.

"Chriiiiiist guyyyyy, hit yer serrrve over da net, EH!"

We played the Wakefield and Ironwood teams twice every year... but that one match is the one that's still vivid.
