Expressions for 'Can I go together with you?' #1 (permalink) Tue Feb 20, 2007 2:47 am   Expressions for 'Can I go together with you?'

Hi,

I have been thinking of some different expressions with a drift of 'Can I go together with you?'. e.g. when John wanted to go somewhere together with Emily, he asked:

1. Can I go (together) with you?
2. Can I come with you?
3. Can I go along (with you)?
4. Can I come along (with you)?

Could you tell me what the difference is among the four? Thank you.

.
No difference that I see, Haihao-- just variations on a theme. 'Go' shows us that the speaker is imagining the listener 'going away' away from him while 'come' means that the speaker is seeing the both of them moving off together. It is just a matter of subconscious perspective, and is rather arbitrary.

Hi Mister Micawber,

Your description for the two pictures of imaging and the comment 'It is just a matter of subconscious perspective, and is rather arbitrary' were just what I wanted badly and now I got them full-handed. :) Thank you very much.
