Hello Bijanb,
Looking back, it seems that your question is about same-way question tags. (It's lucky that this thread is not too long to be able to look back or your question would probably have remained unanswered.)
Although the basic structure of tag questions is positive-negative or negative-positive, it is sometime possible to use a positive-positive or negative-negative structure.
We can make a positive statement to make a guess and then add the tag to ask if our assumption is correct: This is the final match of the season, is it? So you can run a mile in four minutes, can you? She's been training to be an anaesthetist, has she? So she's going to marry him, is she?
We also use same-way question tags to express interest, surprise, anger etc, and not to make real questions. So you're having a baby, are you? That's wonderful! She wants to marry him, does she? Some chance! So you think that's amusing, do you? Think again.
Negative-negative tag questions usually sound rather hostile: So you don't like my looks, don't you? _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Hi, This lesson is very easy! Look at the example below: * [Alex is happy today ], [isn't he?] this is the statement this is the question tag Now, have a look at part one which we call statement or main clause, the verb in it is "Is" of course and there no "Not" with so, it is positive. Now, what we above is " When the statement is positive, the question tag is negative. So, then you say "Is" in the statement, what you are going to say in the tag is "Isn't it ?" And of course the pronoun comes after the verb in the question tag not before as the statement . I hope everyone can understand. Thanks Houria |

Hi Teacher, Yes I do agree with most of the members here....your question tag lesson especially the exercise parts were confusing ones.... like: oh you do, do you? and she does, does she? ...can you explain why and clarify this?
Thanks and regards, Rudy |

Dear teacher,
Could you explain me about "shall have done" When do we use it ? and what do it mean? Moreover, I wonder these sentences which is right? and what are the different of them? eg: I have always liked to read James Bond. eg: I would always like to read James Bond.
And: do you think these sentences right or wrong? - I wished I had not gone there at all.( can we write wish end with ed? Is it ok??? and why wished use with "Past Perfect"? ) - Should there be an emergency, dial 999. ( should here means if right or wrong? If so, it has only independent clause. where is dependent clause?)
The last thing is: What are the different between "would better" and "had better"????
It may have lots of wonder...
thanks for your help... |
