All these talks about 'accent' reminded me of one 'incident'

I was talking with my little sister about which accent we prefer, the British or the American and suddenly she asked why I pronounced 'accent' as 'aksent'.

She told me the right pronunciation is 'acent'(she attends an international school and they use english, so I bought it,eventhough she's 12)

But I remember that my father also pronounced it as 'aksent', the dictionary also said 'aksent'.

So which is the correct one or the one that native speakers use?

Hi,

I would use the full value of the double 'c' as in other words like 'accept' and 'access'. The word 'accessories' is frequently pronounced as if it only has one 'c' but to me that sounds wrong.

Hi Nina,

As far as I know 'accent' is pronounced the way Alan described in all standard versions of English. Could you please ask your sister for more information about the way she pronounces 'accent'?

Thanks,
Torsten

Most folks over here would say it as some form of "@K-sent".

the "a" is as the "a" in words like at, bat, pat, etc.

In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (da UP, eh!), however, it is pronounced "AHK-sent". "Ac", in this case, rhymes with Tom, bomb, mom, etc.

Sorry, but I'm not sure I understand you. Do Michigan people pronounce "AHK" like the French people do nasal sounds in their speech?

i don't know how french folks pronounce nasal sounds.

While I lived up in northern Wisc, it seemed to me that the "@" phoneme -- the "a" in bat, cat, at, pat, mat (etc.) -- that the rest of us used was pronounced "ah" (cot, not, plot, trot, etc.) by Yoopers.

Torsten,

My sister told me that her teachers pronounce accent 'acent' all the time. I tried to tell her maybe she mistook the word 'accent' for ascend or essence or any other similar words but she insisted and said that most (if not all) her teachers pronounce it 'acent'.

And when asked about the teachers background, she told me that her teachers are mostly UK graduates.

Tom,

I was referring to how the french make 'gh' sounds in their speech. I'm not sure I described it correctly either, the nasal thingy I mean.
