Hi Alan,
How would you describe a snob?

Englishuser has a point, in that there are several kinds of snobs. The general definition of a snob could be ‘someone who only likes and even admires people who are of a higher social class than themselves’. They attach importance to things like snob value, cachet or prestige.
An inverted or reverse snob is the opposite, i.e. someone who disapproves of upper social classes.
Then there are intellectual snobs, who look down on those who are not as well educated as they feel they are themselves. Food/wine/grammar/literary/music snobs, for example, are derivatives of this meaning.
As far as I’m concerned, I like to think I’m in none of those categories. Now, does that make me a snob of sorts? |

Hi,
OK a definition of a snob within my lights - anyone who considers themselves superior in any human activity to any other person in the same human activity.

I'm not quite sure I understand your definition, Alan. If I believe that I speak German better than my sister, then you would consider me a snob for that reason? I think being a snob is somewhat different to being snobbish. Well if you think your German is better than your sister and act like it at times I think that is just you being snobbish.
It's similar to "being right and being righteous", I think.
Anyway, in response to Alan's question, no I am not a snob but at times, I can be unbearably snobbish, we all do I think.
Snobs act snobbishly all the time and it's something that they do, they need to make people feel bad about themselves just to feel superior or good.
Anyway, what do we call a person who always thinks he's right and never wrong? "Mr.Knows-it-all? Or a snob too? |

Only if you consider yourself superior to your sister on account of your higher level of German, I'd say. |

Fat chance of that happening. But your take on the definition is similar to mine, Conchita. _________________ "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." ~ Abraham Lincoln |

Are you talking to me, EU? I think I've answered the question already.
What about you? What's your answer to Alan's question?
What about you, Alan? How would you answer your own question? Having gotten to know you a bit over the past year, I assume that something may have prompted your question. Have you got a bee in your bonnet about something?

Hi,
I really would not consider myself a snob. I do not feel or think I am superior to other people in any way. I think people's choices are far more important than any inborn factors, although it surely is quite difficult to say whether or not a particluar characteristic in a human being is innate. There are some characteristics in some people that I do dislike, but I also think they will eventually be able to get rid of those.

Alan..I'm sure i'm superior to you in some activities just as you are to me. And i'm sure we would consider ourselves as such. Doesn't snobbery entail going beyond that?. |
