TOEFL essay sample: Some people prefer to live in a small town Fri Mar 09, 2007 21:42 pm  TOEFL essay sample: Some people prefer to live in a small town

Where should we live ? In a small town or in a big city ? It is not easy to define the answer. However, in my opinion, living in a big city has more advantages than living in a small town.

Firstly, a big city provides its citizens with better services in life compared to a small town. One of the most essential services receiving much attention by the municipal city is healthcare. In a big city, healthcare services are more available with far better quality. For example, you acquire an acute disease and need to be treated immediately. In a small town, it takes much time to go to the nearest medical station and it may become to late to help you. Even if you arrive in time, it is not sure that a medical station in a small town is capable enough to deal with such a serious case. Meanwhile, if you live in a big city, everything will be different. A modern medical center will help to treat your case better, thus, your probability of being rescued is much higher. In addition, living in a big city, you have access to daily essential items and information more easily. Unlike living in a small town, whenever you need anything, you could walk to a hyper-market or a shopping mall nearby to buy them, or more simply, you could call them to bring what you want to your house. Furthermore, with a huge number of mass media and high-speed Internet connection, you would keep yourself up-to-date with almost everything in the world. Hence, you come to get the feeling of integrating into society. In short, with better services, a big city makes your life more convenient compared to a small town.

Secondly, life in a big city is more active. A big city usually contains a large number of recreational places where many events or entertainment activities are held. Thus, you always have something to amuse yourself and never get boring. Besides, while living in a big city, you see that everyone is always energetic and active. Therefore, you have examples to motivate yourself to work to contribute to society. That makes you become a good citizen. Briefly speaking, life in a city goes by very fast. Hence, it help people live more actively and more helpfully to society.

To sum up, just from some above examples, the advantages of living in a big city have clearly outweighed that of living in a small town. Then there is no reason not to live there.
