TOEFL Essay: Luck and hard work Sat Mar 10, 2007 0:41 am  TOEFL Essay: Luck and hard work

Hello!
One another essay...

Question:
“When people succeed, it is because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success”. Do you agree or disagree with the quotation above? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your position.

Answer:
I disagree with people who say that they don’t believe in luck. Luck is the greatest advantage and the greatest disadvantage of anyone being. Sometimes you have been working hard all your life long without exciting results while somebody has been making succeed career.

It’s very important to appear in the right place in the right time because some small events could change our life dramatically. Three years ago, when I was traveling with my friend, we had to buy tickets at the business class train carriage because of lack sitting places in common one. There we have met a person, who radically changes my friend’s future life. This man was the bank’s staff manager and today my friend is the bigwig at the same bank.

Unfortunately, our success also depends on faults of our opponents. There are situations then we could achieve results like presentation on the International science conference or the appointment of chief engineer as the result of main pretender’s sick or accidental mistake.

But in any case we can reduce the impact of luck on our life. My sister tried to win the scholarship and it was the necessary condition to write a short novel. Her first four novels were denied but her fifth was interesting for the jury and she has won the money. She rewrote a novel five times in spite of misfortune because nobody now the jury tastes. But she has achieved the goal and now I could say that the perseverance has the same significance as luck.

In conclusion I would say that a person must do all necessary to attain his aims, because luck frequently helps to a hard worker and far and few between to an idler. We must hope on the luck but work perfect at the same time.
