Hi,

"Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" is REALLY interesting but difficult for me to grasp its detailed description of the fight between the mongoose and the cobra. Today I have got more to ask for your help.

1. Does this mean: I was not some time (a day) too soon to come down here = I came here just in time?
Quote:
"Rikki-Tikki" put his paws one on each side of the egg, and his eyes were blood-red.


2. Does this mean: put his two paws each on each side of the egg? If so, what is the part of speech of 'one'? A noun as an object of 'put'?

I'm new at this (your Jungle Book thingy) but,

1. I don't think "not a day too soon" meant "came just in time". Somehow I think it meant "I'm glad I came early".

2. I think one can be replaced with each too. Was that your question?
