should there be "are" between "there" and "a lot of" in the sentence below:

As with any grammar rule there ARE a lot of exceptions and it's really best for you to simply read stories and find the adverbs in italics.

Many thanks for pointing out this out -- you are right, the sentence must read "there are a lot of exceptions" and I've just changed it.
