Phrasal verb: put back Tue Mar 13, 2007 4:45 am  Phrasal verb: put back

Hi,

I have come across a sentence as following:

Quote:
He put back two litres of beer in two minutes.

I guess 'put back' = put away, but I wonder why back and away could mean 'drink up'. Could I think it in such a way as:

1. put back = returen (the beer) to the place it 'belongs to', that is, one's stomach?

2. put away = dispose (the beer) by pouring it into one's stomach?

Many thanks.

Hi Haihao

I don't know 'put back' with that meaning (in AmE), however from the context it appears to mean the same thing as 'put away'.

You can find various definitions for 'put away' here:

Hi Haihao,

If you're talking about quick consumers of alcohol, I am more familiar with 'knock back' as in: Charlie could knock back six whiskies in five minutes.
