proposition vs. proposal? Mon Mar 19, 2007 14:20 pm  proposition vs. proposal?

Can someone explain how is it exactly with using these two words: proposition and proposal?

I use them as synonyms for the word: suggestion e.g. I have not approved of his proposition/proposal.

I am not sure about my being right here.

proposition vs. proposal? Tue Mar 20, 2007 11:37 am  proposition vs. proposal?

Hi Anna

The words proposal and proposition can frequently be used synonymously. But the word proposition has some meanings that proposal does not have. So, they are not synonyms all the time. Sometimes the difference is connected with what kind of suggestion has been made.

Have a look here:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/proposition

My suggestion to you is the same as in previous posts: Try writing some sentences of your own, using the various definitions, and try to make your sentences sufficiently detailed to illustrate the difference. (Context is important.) Then post them here for comment.

In the sentence you wrote above, what kind of suggestion did you imagine the proposal/proposition to be? What is the context?
