Word for water that is neither cold nor warm #1 (permalink) Tue Mar 20, 2007 11:20 am   Word for water that is neither cold nor warm

Hi

Could you please tell me a word for water that is neither cold nor hot or warm? I mean, some people do drink water like this--directly out of a tap. How about "plain water"?

Tom

PS: I don't think "lukewarm" or "tepid" would fit here, or would they?

Hi Tom

'Plain water' doesn't really work because that only suggests that nothing has been added to the water. Why not just say 'cool water'?

I know the water that comes out of my faucet is much colder than lukewarm.

you can vary the level of coolness (the expression thereof, as it pertains to the water's temperature and how you perceive it) of the water thusly:

very hot
hot
somewhat hot
very warm
warm
somewhat warm
lukewarm
somewhat cool
cool
very cool
somewhat cold
cold
very cold

You can choose your own adjectives to modify the levels within hot/warm/cold.

The only word (to my knowledge) for average-temperature water -- neither hot nor cold, sort of firmly in the middle -- is "lukewarm".

The temperature of the water that comes out of my tap, Amy, depends on which knob I turn (now that my water heater works). hehe

hehe Laughing

At the moment, I'm living in a house that was built in 1901 and the plumbing may well be the same vintage. When I turn a knob with an 'H' on it, I get "C water" for quite some time -- exactly how long depends on where in the house the "H knob" I decide to turn is located. Laughing

lol

That sort of brings new (opposite) meaning to "they just don't make 'em like they used to", huh?

Yep. Laughing It's one of those old houses where if someone flushes a toilet while you're in the shower, you might end up with second degree burns. Laughing

gotta love that

that is one reason to keep intra-house relationships harmonious -- fear of toilet/shower retribution.
