While favourites enjoyed their share of form and fortune to advance to the Super Sixes (an added league format eliminating the quarter-finals to prolong the showpiece), other big teams bowed out from the championship with rank bad performances.

Please explain the group of bold words. (particularly `to prolong the showpiece')

The 'Super Sixes' are an additional step in the league championships; meanwhile, the 'quarter-final' step has been discarded; the purpose of these changes is to make the championships longer (and sell more tickets, presumably).
