Hi

I am aware that the word "calm" should rhyme with "psalm", but I have noticed that for some reason unknown the native speakers of English make this word sort of rhyme with "Tom".

Do we agree?

Why?

Hi Tom,

Who on earth have you been listening to/talking to? Maybe it was one of Englishuser's friends with the highfalutin accents! To answer your question, I would stick to your rhyme with 'psalm'.

Or perhaps Tom has been listening to a speaker of North American English?

I'd describe my own "highfalutin" pronunciation of 'calm' as having a very light 'L' sound, but that slight 'L' also tends to bite the dust when I speak faster than usual. 8)

The pronunciation of 'calm' seems to vary quite a bit on this side of the pond:
