Hi, I understand that hobnob means to socialize in general? Or can it mean to go out for a drink? I've come across this word in the following sentence:

I break up my day by riding my bike downtown for coffee, hob-nobbing, whatever in the heck I want to do.

Please let me know your definition of "hobnobbing".
Thanks.

Hi Torsten

I would simply understand honobbing to mean 'chatting' (informally).

Hobnob can also mean 'to be on friendly terms or to rub elbows with someone important', informally, too.

Hi Conchita,

Love the idea of 'rubbing elbows' with someone. Where does that come from?

Funny I didn't think of using the expression 'rub shoulders with', its British counterpart. Perhaps because the American 'elbow' version exists in French and Spanish, too.
