Well, surely you could survive without ever driving a car?

What do you mean by survive?

I would have no work if I didn't have a car. My whole economic life would come crashing down.

I suppose we could move to Antarctica and ski or snowshoe everywhere.

The other day it was actually 26 degrees (F -- a tad below 0 Celsius) at Base Bernardo O'Higgins... and any Wisconsinite will tell you that 26 is definitely bearable.

Heck, on the same day (at the same time during that day,,, not sure about time zones) it was -6 F (freaking cold) in Yakutsk, Russia.

Yakutsk isn't even in the Arctic (or Siberia -- looks like it's south of Siberia), and it was -6 at the end of March.

Now you'll have the added problem of an overweight car with high cholesterol.

And when those cars start huffing and puffing, maybe people will realise what that oil can do to you!

I am sure you could teach people online as well. It is possible to coach ESL learners as well as linguistics students on the Internet, isn't it? Alternatively, you could buy a flat or a house that's closer to where you work.

The market for online instruction is much smaller than that for in-person instruction, because online instruction is not as effective.

Well, that would be interesting if I bought an apartment or house closer to where I work. Where do I work? Last Monday I worked 18 miles west of my home, then I had to drive past my neighborhood to a workplace 14 miles north of my home. From there I had to go another 15 miles in that direction, and when I was done there I could go home. On Tuesdays I have to drive 14 miles north, and three hours later I drive 15 miles west to the next job, and then I can go home. Today I had to drive 31 miles north of my home, then drive back to the location that's 14 miles north of me. Then I had to drive to the place another 15 miles in a different northerly direction. Thursdays are like Tuesdays, and on Fridays I go west about 30 miles. Sometimes my whole day is spent working in my own house, but that's rare. There are no trains or buses that go to any of these places.

So I don't live anywhere near any of the many places where I work, and the place where I live is the most central location possible for me.

Hey Mr. Hehe!

I understand exactly what Jamie is talking about after having done the same type of work for many a moon. Such is the life of a freelancer in ESL. The guys who deliver pizzas probably have it much better -- they normally don't have to drive nearly as far for each product delivery.

I assumed it would have to be premium pizza (at very high prices) to warrant drives of such lengths.

hehe

Hi Jamie, why do you think that in-person instruction is more effective than creating a learning system that uses the Internet and phone? How many people can you personally 'instruct' at any given time? Doesn't 'instructing people' in person mean that you have to explain the same things to one person or a small group of people individually? While you are driving from one 'teaching' location to the next you could be speaking to a number of people online. Wouldn't it be much more effective if you recorded your 'instructions' and made them available for download or on CD? What exactly can you do 'in-person' that you can't do on the phone or through the web? Also, how do you define 'small' when it comes to measuring the market for 'online instruction'?

HI guys,

I think you've skipped the topic oil!!! As for my country, we're one of the crude oil exporting states and if one day there'll be no oil then I can imagine what may happen to not only Azerbaijan and other oil exporting states, also those which import crude oil.For some time powerful states will start searches for new energy sources, then they'll find..and while all the world will be relaxing without fights for oil, suddenly again the rivalry and wars will start between them..
