The proper position for "Also" Tue Mar 27, 2007 6:31 am  The proper position for "Also"

Hi all teachers,

Please tell me if both of my sentences are Okey:

1)Not only should the e-mail be personally addressed, it should also include personal i.e. customized content.

2)Not only should the e-mail be personally addressed, it also should include personal i.e. customized content.

Thanks in advance,

edwin

Hi,

The preferred order is in (1) since 'also' really refers to the necessity to 'include' in that sentence.

Hi Edwin,

I am afraid sentence(2) sounds a little weird and I feel Alan has made it very clear to us that the original sentence:

Quote:
Not only should the e-mail be personally addressed, it should also include personal i.e. customized content.

could be 'reworded' as:

The e-mail should not only be personally addressed, it should also include personal i.e. customized content.

If you put 'also' before 'should' I am sure you would find it a little unbalanced.
