.
Some excerpts from Wikipedia:

Habeas corpus (/'heɪbiəs 'kɔɹpəs/) is the name of a legal action or writ by means of which detainees can seek relief from unlawful imprisonment.

A writ of habeas corpus ad subjiciendum is a court order addressed to a prison official (or other custodian) ordering that a prisoner be brought before the court so that the court can determine whether that person is serving a lawful sentence or should be released from custody.

The right of habeas corpus—or rather, the right to petition for the writ—has long been celebrated as the most efficient safeguard of the liberty of the subject.

For usage, see the many hits of MS GOOGLE.

Hi MM

Alan posted this link a while back:
http://www.natcorp.ox.ac.uk/

The link I gave in my last post was to the results of my 'habeas corpus' search on that site.

So, I just do my BNC searches that way. The site will give you up to 50 results -- more than enough for examples of usage. As I understand things, if this page comes up with less than 50 results, then that's all there is (of what you're looking for) in the whole corpus.
