Hi,

Could you please help me with:

Quote:
But it was Stewart Snyder whom she encouraged. He was so much manlier than the others; he was an even warm brown, like his new ready-made suit with its padded shoulders. (Main Street)

1. Could I understand it as this: he was an unfluctuate, ardent, brown-faced guy? If so, is brown used here to express brown-colored man?

Quote:
The next day in library class she had to read a theme on the use of the Cumulative Index, and she was taken so seriously in the discussion that she put off her career of town-planning--and in the autumn she was in the public library of St. Paul.

2. Is 'She' a metonymy for the 'theme'?

Quote:
She went to dances and suppers at the houses of college acquaintances. Sometimes she one-stepped demurely; sometimes, in dread of life's slipping past, she turned into a bacchanal, her tender eyes excited, her throat tense, as she slid down the room.

3. Is the 'room' her own room or somewhere else? Why 'slid down'?

Many thanks in advance.

1. Could I understand it as this: he was an unfluctuate, ardent, brown-faced guy? -- I think he is just well-tanned, Haihao.

2. Is 'She' a metonymy for the 'theme'?-- No, 'she' is the woman being written of.

3. Is the 'room' her own room or somewhere else? Why 'slid down'? -- No, the room where they are dancing. 'Slid down' = moved gracefully across [the room].

You made the scales fall from my eyes again, Mister Micawber. In fact I tried many times from various angle to grasp the picture given but was unsuccessful.

Many thanks for your full range help from the very beginning of my new trip along the Main Street.

Good! We don't want scaly eyes around here. A note of warning, though-- my opinions are based only on the excerpts you supply. I don't recall the story line.

No problem, Mister Micawber, maybe that's what I really need. I feel it's always more beneficial to me to be focused on the 'raw' picture to make an instinct imagination for it than to run after the story line. Thanks again.
