Hi,

I have a question to those of you who have moved from a country to another: What sort of things did you take with you to your new homeland and how much did it cost you?

Hi EU

When I first went to Germany, I went with 4 suitcases. Three years later, when I felt certain that I'd be staying for "quite a while", I had my household goods shipped over in a container. I didn't ship anything requiring electricity except for my phone. I bought things such as washing machine, TV, toaster, microwave, vacuum cleaner, lamps, etc in Germany. I took my phone only because cordless phones cost about ten times more in Germany back then and both the electrical part and the jack on my American phone were easy to adapt.

Shipping a container of household goods isn't cheap, but I imagine the price varies somewhat from country to country. If you have a lot of books (as I did), that can add tremendously to the total weight. I think it nearly doubled mine. The price usually reflects both volume and weight.

Hi Amy,

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Where did you keep your household goods during your first four years in Germany?

Hi Nina

The brought/couldn't combination would work in any case. Can't or don't would only work if you haven't yet found out whether or not you understand your Japanese lecturer.

Hi Nina

Assuming you haven't met your lecturer yet, yes.

~~~~~~~~~
Hi Tom
15 years ago it cost approximately $3000. The move back cost double that.
