This is figurative. It basically means that when there is too much stress, it is possible for him to break down mentally or physically.

Yes, this sounds like a third conditional. It sounds like Sachin is no longer playing cricket and so it is impossible for him to have an influence on Indian cricket in the future. Or maybe if India is out of the world cup, it just means "If Safrin's team had been (were still) in the competition, he would have done a lot."
