TOEFL essay: a custom from your country that you would like people to adopt #1 (permalink) Wed Apr 04, 2007 14:01 pm   TOEFL essay: a custom from your country that you would like people to adopt

Topic: Describe a custom from your country that you would like people from other countries to adopt. Explain your choice, using specific reasons and examples.

Each country around the world has its own customs that depend on its culture and tradition. For example, Japanese have the custom wear kimono on their special occasions; Spanish have their dinner at nearly 10p.m; or with Chinese, on Chinese New Year’s eve (based on Lunar calendar), they have reunion dinners with their families. In my country, there are also many special customs. But the one I choose for other people around the world to adopt is teachers have their own day as Teacher’s Day. Because in any countries, teacher is the person who should be respect than anyone and that day will be the chance for students remember about their teachers and express their admiration.

In my country, Viet Nam, November 20th is Teacher’s Day or Vietnamese Educator’s Day. This day became a holiday not only for teachers but for all students. There was a lot of interesting activity in preparation for greeting it in advance. For instance, good marks competitions which students try their best to have good marks; writing competitions, the prizes will be given for the classes or students have the best notebooks. Especially, students also write poets or essays about their teachers, and after that, they was presented on wall-newspapers in school’s exhibitions. Furthermore, students always visit their teacher’s home with flowers and small gifts. That activity is organized inside each class and always very exciting.

A day for teachers like that should to be a custom in all country. As we know, even in Viet Nam or other countries, teachers are always be respected by everybody. Each of us have our own teachers, they may be the ones who taught you in high school, in university or maybe only the one who you admire as your teacher because of his advices. After your parents, they are the persons who give you many knowledge and experiences. A good teacher, with his dedication and enthusiasm, can instruct his students not only how to do an difficult arithmetic problem but also how to be a good person. A teacher can give his knowledge to hundreds or even thousands of students in his whole lifetime. That’s really a hard and great work.

Furthermore, Teacher’s day is also a chance for students express their honor to their teacher. As I mentioned above, there are many ways for students to welcome this day such as good marks, essays, poets, flowers or small gifts which are bought by their saving money. Those become wonderful prizes for their teachers. Especially with former students, who graduated for a long time, this day gives them an opportunity to visit their teacher’s home. Every year, on Teacher’s day, my secondary classmate and I always visit our former teachers who taught us 10 years ago. That’s a special day for all of us to gather together and talk about many memories that we had at that time.

In Vietnam, the admiration of students with their teachers is the long-lasting tradition. Therefore, Teacher’s Day is one of the most important holiday in a year. In this day, students show their honor to their teacher who absolutely deserve all the best things for their efforts. Therefore, I think it will be great if teachers all over the world also have a special day like that.
