presumption vs assumption, check vs control? #1 (permalink) Wed Apr 04, 2007 21:12 pm   presumption vs assumption, check vs control?

Hi,
what is the main difference between make the assumption and make the presumption?
e.g I made the ................that she lived somewhere near my house.

How should I say here?:
This factory is regularly checked/controlled by officials.

Thanks in advance and my regards to all English learners :)

1. I made the assumption that she lived somewhere near my house. 'Make the presumption' is not a usual combination.

2. This factory is regularly inspected by officials.

Hi Conchita,

Is it natural to say 'I made an assumption that she lived somewhere near my house.'? Is it possible to make 'make a presumption' a combination?

Just curious.

Curious is good! :)

You can either make an assumption (without specifying the assumption), or make the assumption that... (if you say what the assumption is).

This would also apply to 'presumption', I suppose. However, I'm not sure it's as commonly used. Someone else's opinion would be nice.
