Hi gq5974
You're right. Simply memorizing translations of words is never enough. English simply has too many words with similar but different meanings or nuances and usages.
Memorizing lists of words with dictionary definitions (English-English) is also not enough if you want to learn vocabulary well. You need to read, listen to and use the vocabulary in context. And you also need to learn which words are often "partners" (used together/typical collocations). _________________ "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." ~ Abraham Lincoln |

Yeah! And there is one more nuisance - connected with prepositions FE: I know that "Obvinat" in Russian means "to accuse". But we use it with the preposition "v" which means "in". So I could say some time ago "I accused him in the crime" because then I didnt know that in English this verb is followed by the preposition "of" (which cannot be translated into Russian at all ). Of course there are many more complicated situations
So, just knowing the direct translation of words is definitely not enough. |

| English is a language of aspect .eg the translation of the french verb 'marcher' in English depends on how the person walk so translating word by word is not good methos as far as english is concerned |

I sometimes think that I am really a fool. Because, I has memorized and memorized and so and... English vocaburary, idioms and various expressions.. But I forgot most them. Why? Do I have inane question? Frankly, Some Koreans are good at Enlgish fluent. because, they have lived abroad, especially the US. _________________ VERITAS LUXMEA !! |

| To be a good translator you have to practice everyday. An english proverb says that 'Practice makes perfect'. So keep practicing you will master english language later on |
