The Australian bowlers couldn’t quite manage that, but a sixth wicket with 54 on the board meant the danger of being bowled out under 100 still lurked.

I think, `lurked' means `unpleasant feeling'.

Am I right?

If I am wrong, please tell the correct one.

Yes, that's the general idea. 'The danger still lurked' = the danger still held potentiality.
