Hi,

You appear to be missing the point. in store is a fixed expression and means "forthcoming, about to happen".
Who knows what's in store for us (who knows what will happen to us in the future)
So, it has absolutely nothing to do with the TV screen

Good, I have the same doubt and I can´t see any information or explanation about that yet... I didn´t understand why to use "store" in the sentence...

Hi Cida,

As Alex explained, 'what's in store' is a fixed expression -- an idiom. Do you know what the word 'idiom' means?
Thanks,
Torsten

hi everybody, i'am attending this forum at first time. If somebody still interesting why use "in store" it this sentence
-Let me tell you what's in store for you on television tonight- i can explain.

"In store" - synonyms are "forthcoming" and "imminent" - and their meaning is "coming" and "liable to happen soon"

Hola soy español,estoy en esta "web" desde el pasado verano y la encuentro fascinante, first of all thanks a lot for this web,I've found real friends here as well in babbel,I think internet can be an useful tool(I'm a carpenter) for learning a lenguage mainly when I haven't much spare time due to my bussinesl s.Well I would translate it as

Me gustaría saber lo que me depara/reserva el porvenir=futuro.Es correcto para mi,pero suena recargado
Si alguien necesita ayuda con el Español estaría encantado de echarle un cable-If someone needed somehelp with Spanish it would be a pleasure

in store #24 (permalink) Mon Dec 07, 2009 12:16 pm   in store

hi, everybody.
i will try to explain this phrase as clearly as possible.

I'm sure everybody heard about "IDIOMS" - a group of words in a fixed order that have a particular meaning that is different from the meanings of each word understood on its own.

And please, everybody must remember that english native speaking people like very muchu sing idioms.

Now begin to explain this phrase/idiom "in store" - it means - "coming in the future; about to happen; waiting to happen to somebody"

1. he did not yet know what lay in store for him= he did not yet know what's coming in the future for him or he did not yet know what's about to happen for him.

2. But who can tell what the fates have in store?= But who can tell what the fates have about to happen coming in the future?

3. We don't know what life holds in store for us = We don't know what life holds that will come in the future for us = We don't know what life prepares to happen the future for us.

4. If she had known what lay in store for her, she would never have agreed to go.=
If she had known what happens in her further life, she would never have agreed to go.

I have learning Spanish by myself and also i have a question concerning these two sentences:

Me gustaria saber lo que el futuro tiene reservado para mi = I'd like to know what the future has reserved for me.

Me gustaria saber lo que el futuro tiene preparado para me = I'd like to know what the future has prepared for me.

I think second sentence is more suitable in english, does anybody tell me which one is right in spanish.

thanks and if anybody want to have more explain concerning this idiom and any other i'm always will glad to help. Don' t hesitate.

Hola de nuevo, sobre tu pregunta la segunda frase no tiene ningun sentido ,en español puedes decir:
-Me gustaría saber lo que me depara o reserva el futuro
-Me gustaría saber lo que depara o reserva el futuro para mi(aunque como ya dijé en el anterior mensaje suena muy forzado)
-El porvenir es el futuro pero con un matiz positivo, cuando un estudiante es muy aplicado dicen que tiene un gran porvenir

Dear Torsten,

Thank you for your congratulation for my progress I have been making. Really the last week I could deal lot with my English Learning. I can't say this this weekend. But this doesn't mean I won't keep up this pace. At least I'll try it.
I did my challenge&challenge.I bought a head-set and when I read out the lesson my "record-sign" became blue and I tried to do something and clicked to the cancel because I thought that I could repeat the record, but I didn't succeed. Could you give me a piece of advice how I can record with head-set.Otherwise the record were better than generally. When I recorded I saw on a rectangular sign at the up-corner and this could play the record. But the usual recording sign was totally blue.
I agree with you that we have to write everything on the forum, that's why I write this letter here. Though I know it is interesting only for me.
I am waiting your answer. I downloaded the Jawa what you suggested, because my Jawa was very monotone, that's why I bought the head-phone. I see you understand how works the internet I hope you can say me how to do it.

Thank you very much in advance!!!

My test was: 10:10.

Best regards:
