Police are ineffective at stopping violent crime, unless they are magically on the scene as the crime is occurring. If you have a gun (or, I suppose, a poker, broom, baseball/cricket bat or knife. hehe), you have a chance to defend yourself, your family, your property.

I don't agree with your last sentence.

An armed population is difficult to be controlled by a would-be tyrant, or by foreign opposition. Guns can protect a people en-masse, in that way.

Criminals are going to get guns, and they are not going to give them up. That is a fact of life in the US. So to have a chance at stopping that criminal from killing/raping/stealing from you, you need a gun. Cops won't get there in time unless, as stated previously, they're magically already in the vicinity.

Is there anyone who owns a gun ? i mean the people in this forum. Because i haven't seen a true gun in my real life except seeing it in movies. I asked only out of old curiosity.

Yea, lets arm the citizens of our countries and that way we can cut down on army expences (the army can be abrogated !!!)

Well, I don't own a gun now but I used to go to a shooting range when I was younger. When I was a teenager, I was trained to use a Kalashnikov and I would frequently take part in shooting competitions that were run by a semi-military youth organization. Later when I served the army we would also go the shooting range about once a week.

I was a pretty good shooter back then but I haven't used a gun in years and at this point I have no intention to change this.
What about you Aleaf, are you going to serve the army?

Some of my neighbours do own a gun. They take precautions from being robbed or subjected to criminal assault. Once I was given an opportunity to sink a shot. I took up a challenge to break the stereotype( in my town) that a gun in the female hands is a horrible and unbelievable picture. When I ascertained there was none within the 10000000(   ) km, I fired a shot. The overall experience proved to be neither good nor bad.
