This means simply why but the speaker is very surprised as well and can't understand the reason why. _________________ English as a Second Language You can read my ESL story Phrasal Verbs/go |

Hi, What on earth for? is an expression both asking why and at the same time expressing great surprise - which is roughly what I said over a year ago.

Hello!
My answer was "what on earth for". But now the correct answer is why on earth to. Why? |

Hello Snoopy
The test seems to be working fine. Perhaps you simply clicked on the wrong option by accident.
I've just tried the test, and option (a) (What on earth for?) is given as the correct answer.
If you choose option (d) and then click to see the answers to the questions, you will be told that (d) is incorrect. . |

Dear Mr. Alan/Torsten,
It is really nice to see that we can also listen question and answer both through (audio facility) but when I click the audio test is disappeard and I just can listen answers.
Can it possible that I can listen and as well as see the test same time?
Moreover, can you please suggest any site in which we just enter "any word" to listen (how it is pronounced?) or is there any facility on this site? Because I have noticed many times I want to speak and although know the word but sometimes can not speak just because of its pronounciation.(as we know many words but don't know how they will be pronounced?)
anxiously waiting for your response/guidance. |

You can use either. They are so alike as to make no difference.
" Why on earth did you say that.? "
" What on earth made you say that.? "
Same difference. Both demand the same answer. _________________ If you need me, I'm here. |
