Looking for a good English for children program Fri Apr 20, 2007 6:56 am  Looking for a good English for children program

Hi all, I have a Vietnamese lovely niece. She is 10 years old. I'm looking for some great useful English programs for her to learn. She lives in a very small town in Vietnam and also joined some kinds of English class in her hometown. But i think they are not useful enough for her to learn and may make her pronunciation is not good for her studying in the future. I'm very worried about it. And now i think that English is the most important thing for her future.
So I am looking for some kinds of English-for-children training course to build up a standard English skill. I highly appreciate any idea or advice from you guys.

Hello Hieu,

It's very good that you are trying to help your niece improve her English. The most important ingredient to success is a strong interest in the language. Now, I'm sure there is a great variety of materials, courses and classes available for kids. However, it might be best if you simply try and find out what kind of cartoons, movies, songs and books your niece likes. I'm sure she already knows a lot of cartoons and stories that are made in the US. For example, ask her if she has seen movies like Ice Age, Finding Nemo or Shrek. If the answer is yes, then try to get her watch these movies again, this time in the original version. The trick is to offer her materials that she really likes. If she finds the dialogs in these movies too difficult to understand, try something lighter. Walt Disney has created a fantastic product for kids called "Magic English". You might buy on eBay to save money. Make sure you find materials that are both interesting and suitable for your niece. The problem with the vast majority of ESL materials is that they are just boring and artificial because they were created by linguists. What kids need are interesting characters they can identify with and a gripping story. Pretty much like adults...
Please, let me know what you think.
Regards,
Torsten
