Many of the people there thought that North and South America form just one continent.

That's what we were taught at school and is still being taught in some European countries. Back in the sixties there was supposed to be only five continents. It's not our fault if a bunch of people at some point decide on a different (highly debatable) number -- which they don't even seem to agree on or isn't really defined, as far as I know.

It's kind of silly to consider Europe and Asia separate continents, since there's no distinct separation between them, and then on the other hand think that North and South America are one continent, even though they are distinctly separated by a very thin strip of land.

Besides, that guy who worked at the bank thought not only that they were one continent, but that they were essentially one country!

Can the argument be made that the Panama Canal separates North and South America?
