Hello Torsten,Alan Townend and all the forum users.

If we put these words 'Goodness me'.It will only for a single person. But it is said that more than 2 people have collected thousand pounds this week for charity, then why can't it be 'Goodness them'

Best Regards,
Sai Shandilia.

Because ithe phrase does not apply to the people who collected the money. It applies to the speaker.

Hi Cristovam, you are trying to be too literal in the translation.

Although 'goodness' probably derives from 'God-ness', it cannot be phrased in the way that you are trying to do. It is simply a way of saying that you are surprised, shocked, angry or bemused about something instead of using the mild profanity 'god'. In each of these phrases, the word 'goodness' is said instead of the word 'god'.

Goodness knows what we're going to do now!
Thank goodness you are home safe.
I wish to goodness you had told me before you did that.

'Goodness me' is an extension of the above:
Goodness me! You gave me a shock crashing into the room like that.
Goodness me! I haven't seen you for ages.
Did you really need to kick up such a fuss. Goodness me, anyone would think you were being murdered.

This is one of those cases where the answer simply is 'we don't speak like that'! The expression as you put it doesn't exist.

Goodness me is always used for mild shock or surprise. In the scenario you describe you could say 'good for them', or 'well done them', or 'good on them'.
