What does 'the man that everyone loved to hate' mean here? #1 (permalink) Fri Apr 27, 2007 2:01 am   What does 'the man that everyone loved to hate' mean here?

Hi,guys

Quote:
In the 80s and 90s, the world was gripped by soap mania-everyone was addicted to 'Dallas' and 'Dynasty'. After a particularly thrilling episode, the first topic at work would be the precious night's viewing. JR became a household name, the man that everyone loved to hate. But,at the end of the day, the world those stars inhabited was a fantasy world.

I don't make sense that 'the man that everyone loved to hate' here. Why the author wrote this. In my opinion, the man here means JR. And JR was very popular,so everyone had should loved him without hated him, right?

And why the autor also wrote,"But,at the end of the day, the world those stars inhabited was a fantasy world". I think this sentense means people loved this kind of star at the end of the day. I am thinking about people loved this kind of programs whenever according to this paragraph.(this is what I read.) But I also thinking about the author wanted to say 'people didn't like it before, but poeple liked afterwards'. Maybe I haven't understand something.

And the end of the day means 'when all is taken into consideration or when everything has happened or been settled', am I right?

Thanks a lot.

Greetings!

Maggie

JR was a despicable character who cheated the other characters for the sake of money. Yet the actor did a great job of portraying him, and viewers enjoyed watching disliking JR's personality and shenanigans.

'But,at the end of the day, the world those stars inhabited was a fantasy world'-- here, the author reminds us that although the story line of Dallas/Dynasty was absorbing to the viewers, who became very involved in following each show of the series, it was indeed only fiction, not a real story. 'At the end of the day' means 'essentially, finally, after all is said and done'.

JR was the epitome of "a man everybody loved to hate"...a more recent example, not a very good one - only one I can think of, is Simon Cowell of American Idol. The guy acts and talks like a jerk and many people hate his guts but then ratings for the show has been phenomenal because of him.
