| I don't know or use "tool" or "tooling" much to know for sure. From what I can see, "tool" is the noun, "tooling" is the adjective -- for example: "the tooling industry" or "a tooling company". I vaguely recalled that I've seen "tooling" used as a noun but I don't think it would be correct to do so. |

Diverhank,
Thanks for the tips. But I came across the phrase "tooling maintenance" in one of the manuals given to me at work. I got so confused.

I think "tooling" here qualifies as an adjective. I'd use tooling here if I were to write it. "Tool maintenance" would sound funny somehow. |

I still don't get it, how is "tooling" maintained?I compared it to the Japanese version that I got, and if I were to translate it, I would probably say "Tool maintenance".
Thanks again Diverhank, for your attention.

| In this case the two should mean exactly the same thing :). You can think of it as "tool maintenance". Sorry I can't be of more help. |

Please don't apologize, you've been very helpful. Maybe I was just thinking too much.I got so confused reading the same thing in two languages. There were other expressions in the manual using the word "tooling" as a noun (from my impression) but I can't recall any of them right now. Thanks again.
