I don't know or use "tool" or "tooling" much to know for sure. From what I can see, "tool" is the noun, "tooling" is the adjective -- for example: "the tooling industry" or "a tooling company". I vaguely recalled that I've seen "tooling" used as a noun but I don't think it would be correct to do so.

Diverhank,

Thanks for the tips. But I came across the phrase "tooling maintenance" in one of the manuals given to me at work. I got so confused.

I think "tooling" here qualifies as an adjective. I'd use tooling here if I were to write it. "Tool maintenance" would sound funny somehow.

I still don't get it, how is "tooling" maintained?I compared it to the Japanese version that I got, and if I were to translate it, I would probably say "Tool maintenance".

Thanks again Diverhank, for your attention.

In this case the two should mean exactly the same thing Smile. You can think of it as "tool maintenance". Sorry I can't be of more help.

Please don't apologize, you've been very helpful. Maybe I was just thinking too much.I got so confused reading the same thing in two languages. There were other expressions in the manual using the word "tooling" as a noun (from my impression) but I can't recall any of them right now. Thanks again.
