Sometimes, the commentators say (Hayden slashed the ball) and sometimes (Hayden smashed the ball)

Could you tell me, what is the difference between (slashed and smashed)?

.
Among other things, 'slash' means to cut broadly with a sharp-edged implement and 'smash' means to strike strongly with a blunt instrument.

Hayden slashed the ball = he struck it glancingly, at an angle.
Hayden smashed the ball = He struck it powerfully and directly.
.
