meaning of 'separate but complementary needs' #2 (permalink) Sun Apr 29, 2007 15:59 pm   meaning of 'separate but complementary needs'

Complementary in this context means "mutually supplying each other's lack", according to Merriam Webster online. In this sentence, the person needs two separate things that make him happy, his family and his job. If he only had one, he would not have been as happy.
