What does 'who seemed to take delight in being as cruel as possible' mean? Thu May 03, 2007 5:15 am  What does 'who seemed to take delight in being as cruel as possible' mean?

Hi,guys

Here,I have some questions about the paragraph below. Please help me,and thanks in advance.

Quote:
Now,however,it's the turn of 'reality' TV,where viewers share the lives of 'real' people(albeit briefly). TV now has the power to make dreams come true. 'Pop Idol' was a phenomenon that swept Britain in 2002. Millions of viewers tuned in every week as one by one, hopeful pop stars were publicly humiliated by judges who seemed to take delight in being as cruel as possible. So successful was this show that it was exported to the US. 'American Idol' was similarly successful, and in it's second series had a massive 27 million viewers - the highest ever audience for an entertainment show on the Fox Network.

My questions are below.

1.it's the turn of 'reality' TV,where viewers share the lives of 'real' people(albeit briefly).
What does 'albeit briefly' mean here? I guess it means the author simply used 'real' people to describe the TV show. He/she didn't describe the details of the TV show, such as what's the content of the TV show. Am I right?

2.hopeful pop stars were publicly humiliated by judges who seemed to take delight in being as cruel as possible.

Does it mean pop stars had have done some wrong things? And the author wanted to emphasize that the pop stars were popular on that time, and he/she regret the bad thing happened to pop stars. Am I right?

Moreover, may I know what happened to the pop stars? Actually,I have searched it in the Google. I have found out some news about Pop Idol. However, I haven't found out the bad things or judges about Pop Idol. Could somebody tell me if you know?

After reading these kinds of articles, I perceived deeply that if someone wants to learn languages,he/she needs not only learning grammar, but also learning culture and history, also. It can not be avoided to hear somebody talks about his/her history when speaking.

Greetings!

Maggie Shocked

Hi Maggie,

1. viewers share the lives of 'real' people(albeit briefly) means

Viewers can see how real people live but only for a short time of period.
Viewers can see only a part of their (real people) life.

2. hopeful pop stars were publicly humiliated by judges who seemed to take delight in being as cruel as possible. means

The judges enjoyed to say very bad things about the popstars.
It was an enjoyment for the judges to humble the popstars.

The popstars didn't do anything wrong and they didn't regret what they did.
They gave their best even if some of them don't have a good singing voice.

Hi Maggie,
You are absolutely right about the "culture" part. I take it that you haven't seen the TV show "American Idol" where you are in Taiwan? This is basically a talent show where real, ordinary people have a chance to perform (mostly sing) on TV. In this article, "hopeful pop stars" describes these ordinary people --"hopeful" is the key word.

The hopeful people's successes are judged largely by the TV audience but the show does have 3 judges who are really mediocre performers themselves. These 3 judges, especially a guy named Simon Cowell, make it a point to be very demeaning to the contestants, strangely much to the delight of the audience. Hope this clears things up a bit Smile.
