If you raise money you organize various activities such as concerts or other culture events. People who buy tickets know that part of the money goes into a special fund that severs a social purpose.
You can also raise money for commercial projects.

Hi JC,

Raise is used in expressions like raise money (collect money for a cause)/raise chidren (bring children up)/raise your left hand (lift up your left hand).

Gather has the sense of collect often with abstract nouns as in: gather information/gather news and also to assemble around as in: gather a crowd (bring a crowd together).

Hope that helps.

Alan

Hi,

Does "raise" mean "collect" ? Or "raise" has something to do with the "extra money" they might make ? like profits out of the revenues and are given to charital works.

Hi,

'Raise money' does suggest that you are collecting money usually with a special purpose in mind as in: They are trying to raise money to pay for a new centre for young people to be built.
