If you raise money you organize various activities such as concerts or other culture events. People who buy tickets know that part of the money goes into a special fund that severs a social purpose.
You can also raise money for commercial projects.

Raise/gather Wed Sep 21, 2005 21:55 pm  Raise/gather

Hi JC,

Raise is used in expressions like raise money (collect money for a cause)/raise chidren (bring children up)/raise your left hand (lift up your left hand).

Gather has the sense of collect often with abstract nouns as in: gather information/gather news and also to assemble around as in: gather a crowd (bring a crowd together).

Hope that helps.

Alan
