For me it's the highlight of the year and in view of your nationality, I'm sure you'll be wrapped round the tele this year!

Hi Alan,

I take a keen interest in the Eurovision Song Contest, so I will be wrapped round the tele every year the contest takes place. This year I am looking forward eagerly to seeing Georgia's and Turkey's performances.

In view of my nationality? I can't remember showing you my passport, Alan. I think times are long gone since your country of residence was automatically your country of citizenship.

The Eurovision Song Contest is a show I try not to miss, although my enthusiasm has somewhat waned over the years.

I find it particularly interesting to see how the event has evolved in its fifty-year history – just compare the songs/voices/choreography, the staging and... the outfits and hairstyles!

Two songs that stand out for me for bringing back childhood memories are ‘Poup?e de cire, poup?e de son’, by France Gall, and ‘Elle ?tait si jolie’, by Alain Barri?re. Curiously I’ve never liked ‘Waterloo’ much (and look how successful ABBA has been!).

Hi,

What do you think about the winning performance of the year? It's interesting to note that most Western European countries didn't receive that impressive scores. What has happened to Ireland, The UK, Spain, Germany, and Sweden, for instance? Norway, Denmark, and Iceland didn't even make it to the final. I also noted that Malta gave the UK 12 points, probably out of loyalty to the former Queen of Malta, Elizabeth II.

Thanks, EU, for making my night!

This year's contest is yet another glaring example of how politicking can manipulate and almost ruin an otherwise pretty decent show. Neighbouring countries often vote for each other, which can be understandable. Now, when all the Eastern countries (which are, after all, a huge bloc) decide to do that, as happened tonight, it results in an unfair Eastern-Europe-against-Western-Europe competition.

They should really bring back a professional jury instead of this silly, boringly predictable televoting, if you ask me.

All in all, though, the somewhat higher quality of the performances this year saved the show.

The Irish traditional group was good, only I found the singer could have used her voice better. Maybe she wasn't well or just lacks the practice.

As to the UK entry, well, it was certainly fun to watch. The whole idea and setting were really original -- I expected them to get a higher score.

On the other hand, I never thought the Serbian group would win. Maybe after the unusual display of originality in this year's contest, their setting appeared a bit bland. I'll say this for the singer though: she does know how to employ her voice and did a great job of the song.

Most of the places featured looked blessedly solitary, peaceful, undisturbed, sometimes even surreal and definitely too cold! In contrast, however, the people seemed warm and friendly.
