Just in case Alan is busy wrapping up Christmas gifts, here is my version:
The idiom look before you leap is used to remind you to think carefully before you make an important decision. Maybe, it refers to tigers or other predators who first hunt down their prey and then take a final leap to kill them.

I think all idioms have their fixed structures. We cannot change them. If "leap" is used in this idiom, it cannot be replaced by any other words.
