A Grammar book says that,we can change into direct speech like that:

-> John asks, "Where is she?"

-> John wants to know where is she/she is.

Is "where is she" above normal?

Hi Tortoise,

John asks,"Where is she?"

I would convert the sentence into indirect speech this way:

John inquires where she is or John wants to know where is she/she is.

I heard that if a direct question to the subject contains the link verb 'to be', the direct order of words is not always strictly observed. Thus,'John wants to know where is she ' is also possible.
