Do you know the idiom "white girl"? #1 (permalink) Tue May 22, 2007 10:31 am   Do you know the idiom "white girl"?

Hi,

I have a student in my classroom who is wearing a T-shirt with the line "White Girl" (written in white letters on a red background). Since I'm their English trainer they asked me what "white girl" means and I said I have to look it up which I did. According to the Urban Dictionary, "white girl" is a slang expression for cocaine. Now, I'd like to know whether the "average native speaker" would know this phrase?

Thanks a lot,
Torsten

No, Torsten, I only know "white girl" to be a reference to a caucasian girl or woman. And that usage is quite common. I've never heard "white girl" used to mean cocaine. If it is actually used that way, then I guess only people who are deep into the drug culture would know that.

Hi Amy,

Thanks a lot for your quick response. As you said the expression "white girl" is probably used by US school kids who are into the drug business. The question is why a manufacture would produce T-Shirt with that phrase. Maybe it simply means "Caucasian girl" and the shirt might look funny on an African American woman...

I still think it's not a sure thing that the slogan on the shirt was meant to denote cocaine. It could just mean a regular white girl. I've never heard "cocaine" called that, and I usually know most drug slang. (My ears are open to it, because I worked in crisis intervention when I was a teenager.)

And, Torsten, you wouldn't believe the things it says on some of the T-shirts that some people wear in the US. Some of them are drug references, some of them are obscene, and wearing that type of shirt is usually a good indication of a very low cultural level on the part of the person wearing it.

The ones that bother me the most are those that glorify criminals and murderers. There is one that's still worn by some people that has a picture of Malcolm X holding a sniper rifle and peeking through a window. It says, "By any means necessary." Another popular murderer T-shirt is the one with the picture of Che Guevara on it.

I think you can still buy a barbecue apron with a picture of Saddam Hussein's information minister on it. People used to call him "Comical Ali" (not to be confused with Saddam's genocidal cousin "Chemical Ali"). Under his face, the apron has a quotation from him: "God will roast their stomachs in hell!" There is also a coffee cup with his face and the quotation, "I think you are very far from reality!"

The coffee cups from the college I got my bachelor's degree from say, "Yeah, I draw naked people! What's it to ya!"
